Permeti, Robert (Albanian), b. 1949

Born in Tirana, Albania on the 25.05.1949.

Attended Secondary School in the town of VLORE.

In 1963 he joined the Military College “Skanderbeg” and at the same time graduated from Arts School.

In 1969 he graduated from the Military College as Army General and was allocated to the ground forces of the military administration that look after the FIER bodies.

In 1970 he was released from the army, and began to study painting at the Academy of Fine Arts. He specialised in Scenic Design and Costume. As a painter he graduated in 1975.

After graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts, he was given the opportunity by the general administration of the Ministry of Defence, an opportunity that was often given to artists at the time, to get familiarised with the issues of “national security and historical themes”, aboard the ships of the Balkan and Pontic Area, belonging to the Navy.

In 1991 the Ministry of Defence allocated him also to the Military Headquarters of the ground forces. This position provided him with the opportunity to get plenty of inspiration for his paintings.

As a creative personality he is also a member of the Society of Albanian Writers and in the third conference of “Writers and Artists”, he was voted a member of the “Permanent Committee”. This committee’s very existence and powers depended entirely on the Party.

From 1975 to 1991 he took part in all the cultural and artistic activities which were organised by the Albanian government.

He has exhibited his work in one man shows in the cities of Librazdt, Koritsa, Elbasan and Tirana, and his works have been received with great success.

His works have been exhibited abroad widely, in the US, (Pentagon West Point), in the UK, in Germany, in France, in Turkey, in Bulgaria, in Romania, in Italy and in Austria.

One of his paintings “The Abyss” was first exhibited in the traditional national exhibition of 1982 organized at the National Arts Gallery in Tirana. The characters of the painting represent real life individuals, including Enver Hoxha, the communist dictator, and WWII Anglo-American mission members, such as Brigade General Davis, Colonel Maclean, etc.

By the intervention of Nexhmije Hoxha, wife of the dictator, the painting was censored as having direct associations with the Anglo-American mission members represented in the painting, Mrs. Hoxha insisted that their characters be removed from it, as she preferred the painting without them. However, the artist decided not to make such changes, but rather to remove the painting from the exhibition, even though he was fully aware of the risks associated with such non-compliance. As the communist regime was coming to an end, the painting was re-exhibited firstly in Tirana in 1990, followed by several other exhibitions. To date, the painting is part of the artist’s personal collection and is maintained in excellent condition.

"Abyss 1944 " has been a work in progress from 1977 to 1982. The size of the painting is 200x190 cm. It was done on Chinese canvas and prepared in a Renaissance style. The color brands used are the German Pelikan and French Le Frang. The white colors have in part been handcrafted through Renaissance technology using zinc and silver oxide.
