Cullen, Tom (Irish), b. 1961

Born in Dublin, Ireland, on the 07.03.1961. Abstract Painter.

In 2007, artist Tom Cullen embarked on a significant departure from being largely a representative painter through the exploration of abstract expressionism.

This journey is essentially about his re-discovery of colour and the use of expression through experimentation.

From the interaction of colour and space, there is a sense of spirituality and the unconscious underlining the paintings. The viewer is invited to travel through the works, investigating existence and their own emotional response.

In addition, there are links with literature, poetry, music and light sources in the works.

Influenced by the masters of modern art such as Rothko, Kline, Newman and Hoffmann, he is also interested in the contemporary painters Sean Scully, Howard Hodgkin. The St. Ives artists Patrick Heron, Terry Frost and Sandra Blow also provide inspiration to his work.
