Rocker, Fermin (British), b. 1907

Fermin Rocker was born on December 22nd, 1907. He was the son of Rudolf Rocker, the renowned anarchist leader. He was raised in the East End of London before WWI. In 1918 he moved with his family to Berlin and studied graphic art.

In 1929 he moved again to New York this time, working as an illustrator for magazines, newspapers, books and films. In the 1930s, he became a painter influenced by American Socialist Realism. In 1972 he returned to his beloved London.

Fermin Rocker painted city life in London and in New York.

The paintings exhibited here are of those of his later life in London. They speak for themselves and they speak of post WWI isolation. A gentle observer of urban life and busy city scenes, Rocker painted everyday people going about their everyday business. He sometimes painted from life and sometimes from memory. Despite the often crowded city scenes, his paintings speak of modern isolation and the loneliness of life in the city. He remained a lover of people and a keen prolific painter to the very end of his life.
