Bokshai, Iosif Iosifovich (Ukrainian), b. 1891

Iosif Iosifovich Bokshai was born in Kobyletska Polana, Austro-Hungarian Empire (Transcarpathian region of Ukraine) in 1891. Studied at Academy of Arts, Budapest in 1910-1914. Active in Uzhgorod from 1918. Began exhibiting in 1919; in USSR in 1945. Specialised in landscapes, painted some thematic pictures. Taught at intermediate school, Uzhgorod in 1918-1919 and in 1945; Uzhgorod College of Applied Art in 1945-1957; Lviv Institute of Applied and Decorative Art in 1915-1957. Became a Soviet academician in 1958. Awarded title ‘People’s Artist of the USSR’ in 1963. Also a monumentalist artist. Died in 1975.
