RARE REVOLUTIONARY CUBAN PRINTS by major Cuban artists FREMEZ AND VALDES

This month, ArtImport concentrates on the work of two of Cuba’s most renowned graphic artists, José Gómez Frequez (Frémez) and Luis Miguel Valdés Morales.

A leading figure of Cuban and Latin American serigraphy at the end of the 1960s, Frémez’s work is best known for combining the media of printing, collage, poster art and cartoons with strong political messages. His work can be found in the National Museum of Fine Arts, Havana, Cuba. He died in 2007 at the age of 67.

Through the use of innovative photographic art techniques, mixing popular 20th century icons and a mischievous sense of humour, these highly satirical works from the late 1970s present a sideswipe at American culture, and depict the darker side of US foreign policy. This collection represents a relevant and important reflection of strained relations between two states that, although physically close, remain ideologically leagues apart.

Luis Miguel Valdés Morales, painter and graphic artist, founder and honorary Professor of the Higher Institute of Art of Havana, Cuba, received many national and international prizes, including the medal for national culture, awarded in 2003 by the Cuban Minister of Culture. This exhibition includes a powerful take on the iconic image of El Che.

Paintings purchased in monthly exhibitions receive a complimentary 10% discount.
