A COLLECTION OF SOCIALIST REALIST ALBANIAN PAINTINGS AND POLITICAL INK DRAWINGS BY LISTED ALBANIAN ARTISTS R.PERMETI, N.PROGRI, K.RAKA

This month ArtImport is proud to present one of the first exhibitions of Albanian Political and Socialist Realist art in London. Very little known or studied in the West, Albanian art of this genre draws interesting parallels with that of its long-standing political and ideological allies, The Soviet Union and the People’s Republic of China. The paintings and drawings from this exhibition cover both phases of late communism in Albania chronologically, spanning its communist rule from 1946-1976, as the People’s Republic of Albania, to its second communist constitution as the Socialist Republic of Albania, from 1976-1992.

They explore historical and political issues - such as the genocide of Albanians in Kosovo and the Albanian withdrawal from the Warsaw Pact - reflecting Albania’s calamitous historical clashes with its former communist “protectors”, Yugoslavia and the USSR, and its struggle to maintain its integrity and “independence”. Enver Hoxha, Albania’s forty-year communist dictator, also features in some of the pictures, as painted from life by military-trained artist Robert Permeti. Even though persecuted and purged as part of Hoxha’s Cultural and Ideological Revolution, Albanian artists and writers such as Permeti managed to survive by conforming to the Party’s demands of them.

This fascinating show is an opportunity to consider Albanian art, not only within its historical and political context, but also for its cultural significance and artistic excellence.

Robert Permeti.

Born in Tirana, Albania on the 25.05.1949.

Attended Secondary School in the town of VLORE.

In 1963 he joined the Military College “Skanderbeg” and at the same time graduated from Arts School.

In 1969 he graduated from the Military College as Army General and was allocated to the ground forces of the military administration that look after the FIER bodies.

In 1970 he was released from the army, and began to study painting at the Academy of Fine Arts. He specialised in Scenic Design and Costume. As a painter he graduated in 1975.

After graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts, he was given an opportunity often extended to artists at the time by the Ministry of Defence, to witness first hand the issues of “national security and historical themes” aboard the Navy ships of the Balkan and Pontic Area.

In 1991 the Ministry of Defence posted him to the Military Headquarters of the ground forces. This position inspired a great number of his paintings.

As a creative personality he is also a member of the Society of Albanian Writers, and was voted a member of the “Permanent Committee” at the third conference of “Writers and Artists”. This committee’s very existence and powers depended entirely on the Party.

From 1975 to 1991 he took part in all the cultural and artistic activities organised by the Albanian government.

He has exhibited his work in one-man shows in the cities of Librazdt, Koritsa, Elbasan and Tirana, and his works have been received with great success.

His works have been exhibited abroad widely, in the US, (Pentagon West Point), the UK, Germany, France, Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Italy and Austria.

One of his paintings, “Chasm”, which covers a meeting of the leader of the Party, Enver Hoxha, with British soldiers, was inspired by real life events, and two of the British soldiers in the picture are real characters drawn from life.
