Children and the Idyll in Soviet Painting

This month ArtImport brings you for sale, works from two separate important private collections, accumulated with care over the years, one from the UK and one from France.

One consists of the work of important Ukrainian artists, mostly born in the early twentieth century, such as Besedin, Yarovoi, Mischenko and Yanchak.

The other, is made up of more modern, Russian pictures, from the work of excellent Moscow artists, such as Tchainikov and Epple, painted in the traditional Socialist Realist style.

There are also some important Russian pictures from an older generation of artists, such as Vedernikov and Goncharov.

The overall ambience of both these collections is one of a relaxed and easy going, happy atmosphere. Whether young or old, people are at play, resting, chatting, posing, taking a break from work, even just to stretch and catch their breath.

Children feature prominently in these paintings. They are playing on the beach or by the lake, or simply feeding the chickens in the back yard!

Art, painting, drawing and playing music, seem to be activities both young and old undertake, like the young artists or the young photographers do here, either "en plein air" or inside the home.

Nature, features too, in all its beauty in all four seasons, with the natural elements present: rivers, lakes, the sea. Even in still life, produce from the earth looks wholesome and in great abundance!

Sunny beaches, wintry mornings, and autumnal skies, all evoke the beauty of the Russian landscape in these paintings, and celebrate nature, in its great variety.

Whether presenting a backdrop to the happy human activities, or glorious in its own right, nature, reflects the overall mood of both of these collections.

These are idyllic scenes, celebrating the beauty of life and art, of nature and of humanity, in its happiest, most creative and leisurely moments.

This is indeed the positive and life affirming message of these typically Soviet, idealistic pictures!

Paintings purchased in monthly exhibitions receive a complimentary 10% discount.
